Alliance of Religions and Conservation - secular body, founded in 1995 by HRH Prince Philip, to help the major religions of the world to develop their own environmental programmes, based on their own core teachings, beliefs and practices, by helping the religions link with key environmental organisations. News, case studies and resources.

A Rocha - Christian nature conservation organisation whose first initiative was a field study centre in Portugal. A Rocha is now a family of projects working in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North and South America, and Asia. A Rocha projects are frequently cross-cultural in character, and share a community emphasis, with a focus on science and research, practical conservation and environmental education.

Christian Ecology Link - a multi-denominational UK Christian organisation - for people concerned about the Environment. News, events and resources, including links to Operation Noah (see below).

Climate Changed - use this site, developed by Christian Aid, to find out how you can combat climate change by reducing your energy consumption at work.

The Conservation Foundation - founded in 1982 by David Bellamy and David Shreeve to provide a means for people in public, private and non-profit sectors to collaborate on environmental causes. The Foundation has created and managed a wide range of environmental initiatives, often with the support of commercial partners. Over the years its programme has included award schemes, conferences, promotions, special events, field studies, school programmes, media work, seminars and workshops.

Eco-Congregation - aims to encourage churches of all denominations to consider environmental issues within a Christian context and enable local churches to make positive contributions in their life and mission. Eco-Congregation provides a free environmental toolkit with 12 modules, covering different aspects of church life. Module 1 contains a Churches' environmental check up designed to help churches identify current good environmental practice and prioritise future activities. Other modules help churches put the resulting environmental plans into action. European Christian Environmental Network - network set up in 1998 at a meeting of environmental representatives from 26 countries at Vilemov in the Czech Republic, embracing a wide variety of church traditions and a broad range of environmental work. This includes policy issues like climate change and water, promoting an awareness of God's creation in worship and liturgy and practical environmental management in churches.

John Ray Initiative - an educational charity formed in 1997 to bring together scientific and Christian understandings of the environment in a way that can be widely communicated and lead to effective action, and promote responsible environmental stewardship in accordance with Christian principles and the wise use of science and technology. Offers briefing papers, resources and links to other resources.

Operation Noah - project run by the Environmental Issues Network of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and promoted by Christian Ecology Link (see above). Operation Noah has three elements:

  1. Signing a Climate Covenant
  2. Spreading the word
  3. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions by switching to renewable electricity

The Methodist/URC Environmental Network - Methodist and URC environmental site with news, denominational policies and other resources.

Parish Pumps - Programme run by the Conservation Foundation (see above) in association with the Mission and Public Affairs Division of the Archbishops’ Council with the support of Defra. Members are individuals active in the local communities who receive regular environmental news and information and attend local workshops. Members can apply for Parish Pump Priming Awards to help turn ideas into action. To find out more, or to register as one yourself, contact info@conservationfoundation.co.uk.

Other Environmental Bodies

The Carbon Trust - an independent company, business led and funded by government, tasked with reducing greenhouse gas emissions in business and the public sector, i.e. generally focussed on corporate institutions and businesses.

The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation, funded by government and the private sector, to achieve the sustainable use of energy, cut carbon dioxide emissions and promote the use of small-scale renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. It offers a range of practical advice and support for households, business and the public sector (e.g. schools). Useful resources include an online Home Energy Check, a Savings Calculator and information on energy saving products. Linked resources include:

Local energy efficiency advice centres - the EST has a network of 52 energy efficiency advice centres around the country. These can provide you with expert impartial advice about saving energy. Use the website link or call Freephone 0800 512 012.

'Tomorrow's Climate, Today's Challenge' - website forming part of the Government’s Climate Change Communication Initiative, run by Defra in partnership with the Environment Agency, the Carbon Trust, the Energy Saving Trust, the UK Climate Impacts Programme, the Department for Transport and the Department of Trade and Industry. Background information on climate change and how to help communicate it to others.

Recycling and Waste Management

Stewarding the Earth's Resources - a resource for the church about waste reduction, waste re-use and waste recycling.

Recycle now is a good starting point for information, advice and ideas on what can be recycled. It includes a post code search to find specific information on recycling in your local area.

recycle-more covers the basics of recycling, as well as providing more in-depth information e.g. statistics, waste policies, case studies etc. and advice on more specialist recycling e.g. electrical goods and wood.

Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them, keeping usable items out of landfills. The site has links to local Freecycle schemes.

Efreeko helps people give away things they don't want to others who have a use for them. With the ability to show images of items and to charge for carriage, it can be used nationwide.
