Cutting the Carbon:
Become energy efficient

Once you have assessed your energy use and carbon footprint, it is time to shrink it.

Low Energy Lightbulbs

StF recommends that you begin by switching to low energy lightbulbs. This does not have to be all at once - start with those you use most. But bear in mind that changing can save both money and the environment - and that in a few years incandescent bulbs will no longer be available.

The range of low energy lighbulbs is increasing all the time and can be confusing. The Churches Purchasing Scheme has therefore tried to make it easier with a simple selection tool to help you pick the alternatives to your current bulbs. The bulbs on offer include candle and globe styles to match most fitments, and should meet the needs of most churches and homes. If you cannot find what you want, just call CPS on 0845 458 4584 (lo-call) and they will try to help.

Buying energy efficient appliances for homes or churches

New appliances can be considerable investment whether in the home or church and it can be difficult to know which stand the test of time in energy terms.

The Energy Saving Trust has made it simple - Follow the Logo.

Energy Saving (recommended) The Energy Saving Recommended Logo is awarded, by an independent panel, to only the most energy efficient products. You will find the Logo on a wide range of products, not just electrical/White goods, but including insulation and glazing.

You can also find guidance on buying energy efficient products and a comprehensive database of EST recommended products and EST recommended retailers.

EU Energy LabelAlso common is the EU Energy Label, which rates products from A*, (the most efficient) to G (the least efficient). This label must be shown, by law, on all refrigeration appliances, electric tumble dryers, washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers, electric ovens, air conditioners, lamps and light bulb packaging.

Saving energy

The Energy Saving Trust also has detailed information on the different types of insulation for your homes:
Loft Insulation
Cavity Wall Insulation
Solid Wall Insulation
Floor Insulation
...and on sources of grants and other offers

After you have done this, take the next step along the Path >>
